The need to remodel the current waste management system of Silmet Ltd. has arisen due to the forthcoming closure and environmental remediation of the Sillamäe tailing pond.
The Tallinn Technical University and AS ÖkoSil Ltd. have already made considerable work for preparing a wasteflow inventory and the draft concept.
According to Mr. Tõnis Kaasik, Managing Director of AS ÖkoSil Ltd., the US has the most extensive research base and experience in the field of hydrometallurgy of rare earth metals and rare metals. Under financing from the US Trade and Development Agency, the US engineering firm that will prepare the overall concept and conduct a feasibility study will be selected in the nearest future.
Under the project, the contractor, building on existing plans, will develop technical solutions for a new waste management system that are then checked to ensure compliance with the Estonian legislation as well as with the planned changes and innovations.
The cost of works that will be performed by US companies amounts to over 100,000 US dollars which will be financed by the US Trade and Development Agency.
The date for completing the general concept and feasibility study for the new waste handling system of AS Silmet Ltd. is February-March 2001.
